Welcome CSS Rebooters!
On May 1st, we participated in a large-scale multi-web site global “reboot”, when over 1,400 web sites relaunched with a new web standards-based design.
The CSS Reboot is a community event for web professionals. On May 1st, Rebooters from all over the world re-launched their redesigns simultaneously, bringing traffic, interest and a little respect to their sites. There are no prizes or arbitrary winners, just great exposure and the knowledge that we all participated in something great.
“What are web standards?”, I hear you ask.
“Web standards are technologies, established by the W3C and other standards bodies, that are used to create and interpret web-based content. These technologies are designed to future-proof documents published on the Web and to make those documents accessible to as many as possible.” [Source]
In other words, if you design and build a web site using standards set by the governing body (i.e. the W3C), your site should work on all modern standards-compliant web browsers, Mac and PC platforms, many portable devices (e.g. PDAs), and be ready for any development coming in the future. It will also dramatically reduce the amount of code required to achieve the same effect as older, tables-based designs, thereby enabling the web site to load faster (great for dial-up users), reducing your bandwidth (that you pay for), saving you time and money while increasing the number of people who can access your site.
If you are not designing and building web sites using these standards, you should find another line of work. This is about the development of the Internet and, just as importantly, about your clients.
